    Compassionate, skilled, reliable dementia care

I'm very pleased with the care my mother received - compassionate, skilled, and reliable caregivers who managed meds and dementia needs, were punctual, and provided steady daily and on-call support. Scheduling was excellent (Sam stood out), with flexible, same-day help and clear, responsive communication from the office and accounting. Professional, caring staff overall; a few small improvements possible, but I'd recommend them.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Avenues Home Care | San Antonio presents as an agency with a consistently high level of hands-on caregiving, paired with an office team that is often responsive and accommodating. Across many accounts, caregivers are described as compassionate, clinically competent, and comfortable managing medication reminders, dementia needs, and complex medical situations. Families frequently note rapid starts to service, same-day or short-notice coverage, and a scheduling team that is attentive and flexible. Caregiver quality and clinical skills Caregivers are repeatedly praised for warmth, patience, and practical skills. Multiple families highlight medication tracking, nighttime reminders, transportation to medical appointments, and advocacy with clinicians. The presence of long-tenure aides and references to skilled dementia care suggest an established caregiver workforce with relevant experience. Several reviews single out individual staff (schedulers and caregivers) for consistently good performance; leadership and LTC guidance are also cited as strengths when clinical questions arise. Office communication and scheduling Office staff, including schedulers, are often described as professional, prompt, and easy to work with. Named coordinators receive particular praise for responsiveness and effective scheduling. The accounting team is also noted for keeping families updated in many cases. That said, the administrative experience is inconsistent: there are instances of unclear explanations about services or what is included, and some families experienced difficulty obtaining timely receipts or clear billing documentation. Reliability and shift coverage Reliability is a commonly cited strength — families report steady daily support, dependable attendance, and 24/7 availability when required. The agency appears capable of filling last-minute needs and providing coverage over holidays and nights. However, there is also evidence of variability in caregiver continuity for some clients; while many experienced consistent assignments, others received multiple caregivers or experienced coordination gaps that affected continuity of care. Safety, training, and crisis protocols A few reviews describe serious operational concerns that warrant attention. One instance of a client injury during a transfer led the agency to send a trainer, indicating an identified training gap in transfer safety. Another described an emergency call placed without family consent, which raised questions about decision-making protocols during crises. These items suggest the agency would benefit from stronger, standardized policies for transfer procedures, emergency escalation, and family notification to ensure consistency and reduce risk. Billing and perceived value Billing practices are a mixed area. Some families view the service as worth the cost and praise competitive pricing; others experienced frustration with upfront weekly charges, deposits, delayed or partial refunds, and lack of clear receipts. These recurring billing-process concerns are operational in nature and affect perceived transparency and trust. Where accounting communication was timely and clear, families felt reassured; where it was not, frustration increased. Management and cultural issues Leadership and several front-line staff receive positive mentions for accessibility and going "the extra mile." At the same time, there are isolated but notable complaints about unprofessional language or disrespectful conduct from certain administrative staff. These comments point to an inconsistency in staff professionalism rather than a universal pattern, and suggest opportunities for focused training or culture reinforcement around client-facing communication. Notable patterns and recommendations Strengths cluster around caregiver quality, flexibility, and practical clinical support; weaknesses cluster around administrative transparency, transfer-safety training, emergency decision protocols, and occasional staff professionalism lapses. Prospective clients and families seeking culturally accessible, clinically capable in-home care will likely find the agency's caregiving strong and scheduling responsive. Families should, however, confirm billing terms up front, request written copies of fee and refund policies and receipts, and discuss transfer procedures and emergency notification protocols during intake to set expectations and reduce the risk of misunderstandings.
